Funny when things come around. I produced that design in 2019. Not as a full project but an illustration of some hacks.
The VCO cap waveforms are sharper when the reset discharge path is via BJT's to 0v instead of an N-channel switch in the chip. They are not perfect linear ramp saws, but they are clean compared to the X4046 VCO waveforms.
I think a TL072 will work, in that it won't break anything, but the output will clip, and the edges will be a little glitchy.
