I built my own monitor controller years ago with switched attenuators. One of the expensive items is matching left & right volume - a stereo audio taper pot doesn't have precise equal tracking although the more you pay, the better, but won't be perfect. Using attenuators built with separate resistors can be more easily made to match the channels.
Next expense is the switching itself and some designs use many audio grade relays with digital control while mechanical rotary switches will click/pop sometime sooner or later.
