I'm crap at any instrument and also found most sequencers very frustrating at this when I compare to the trackers I used in the 1990s. Those were a great tool to quickly bang out a melody. I should try Nerdseq one day but holding off as long as I can because I lke the immediacy of modular.
That being said, to work out melodic lines, I've really come to appreciate the Linnstrument. It allows me to do what others here grab their guitar for (though slower - crap instrumentalist). When it's time to really write down the notes, I'll grab my Oxi.
