Your Tunes Here • Re: Change of pace

i don't use compression because my recordings are not for radio, TV, shopping malls, cars, or PA's. they're recordings of my performance the way i heard it when i was playing. i enjoy the large dynamic range of the recordings over headphones. if i compress it, it just sounds loud and samey-samey dull.

I like the way your recordings sound Domin! :0)
I sometimes listen to a mostly classical radio station in the car. Some of these folks don't give a rat's ass about me being in a car, which is mildly annoying.
Haven't tried, but it seems to me that you should sound fine in a car.
use of a compressor/de-esser can help present clear vocal articulation, or as Samatha notes with 'ducking' can be used to balance Bass and Kick in production environments. it depends on your intent, and if you entertain traditional roles in music production for reproduction in various venues whether you should, or need to use one.

in classical or formal music, the dynamic range is a feature, not a bug of the music, and compression would only be used to tame some dynamics for recording, but retaining the dynamic range of the original performance is key.

my recordings try to capture a performance where the dynamics are important to the music. my intent is never to produce a reording that is intentionally reproducable in 'any' environment. it's merely to capture what i heard when i played it. they're best listened to with headphones. they're not great in the car. lol. i drive with my windows down. :0) so, yeah i don't use compression if i don't have to. sometimes there's an exceptionally loud part that needs some attention; such as my last piece in the middle there some loud chords that throws off normalization, so i limit it a bit in places, or use a little compression to bring up the quiet parts to match the loud one.
