Awesome!Mimeophon Tape artifact effect recipe
For those who love lo-fi delays with cassette failures and pitch wobble artifacts (similar to the Generation Loss pedal), I suggest trying out this Mimeophon 'recipe'. It's just one more testament at how incredible of a design this module is, and how much you can use it to craft your own type of sound. I've always been a big fan of the pitch wobble effects you can get with Mimeophon, and I was recently watching this pedal demo video, which inspired me to try and recreate a similar effect with my Mimeophon.
This is what it sounds like.
Source sound (I just used a guitar loop) > Mult signal into 2 e.g. with a stackcable
Signal 1: Dry
> Patch into your main mixer and adjust volume to taste
Signal 2: Wet
> Mimeophon > Any filter with a Frequency CV input > VCA > Main mixer
> Other ingredients: some randomized CV sources and and some audio sample to FM your filter
- Mimeophon: 100% wet, mono in/out, Color at unity (signal not filtered) and little to no Halo (to taste). Send some random CV into the micro CV input of the Rate, which will be our tape pitch wobble effect.
- Filter (I used WMD's C4rbn but any will do): low-pass freq at 3 o'clock
- Send some audio to your filter's Frequency input to FM your wet signal post delay, which will add some random noise artifacts (I used the Disting in Radio Music mode (algo I-1), playing a loop of a field recording I made of some fireworks - you want something with crackling sounds and random transients idealmy (pebbles, steps, rain would also work)
- Use a random source of stepped CV to modulate the VCA to taste, which will create little failures/audio drops, similar to an old tape. Marbles is ideal for this, because you can set its amplitude and offset precisely, on top of adding slew or not.
