The one on the left is made with polysterene film capacitors. That's the biggest effector of the sound with the ResQ that I'm aware of. As far as I know, most of the newer Random Source produced modules are all SMD, which would not be built with polystyrene. I don't know if Random Source ever officially produced any with polystyrene caps. Then is there any way of knowing what "flavor" you're getting without trying a bunch? I'm also considering one but I'm hesitant for this reason.
I'm guessing all of the factory R*S builds are basically the same, but beyond that?
There's this comparison for example, and whatever all the differences and reasons for them may be, I vastly prefer the more unruly, breathing sound of the left one. For 350ish EUR used I'd really like to know what I'm getting.
To get a polystyrene you'd have to buy one from Patch Point (at a steeper markup) or look for an older module. These will all be second hand and possibly a DIY job. Ask for pics of the backside and if you see those big silvery buggers you're good to go.
