The best way is not to do it, unless you are okay with risking your modules. The common choice of using an 1/8" TRS plug is really just asking for it to be hot-plugged and short the 3.3V rail of your modules' microcontrollers to ground. If you have to plumb it between cases, use a connector you won't be able to hot-plug, e.g. snake a flying IDC cable from between modules.
