No, it's not that. It's just that I think the reduced functionality isn't going to justify the low cost differential.
You're only saving 2 of the 4x1 2.54mm headers, an OLED display, a small PCB that serves as a spacer and mount for that display, a small PCB for the jacks, the switch PCB, and a 9x1 2.54mm header. That's not even $20 to $25 in parts cost savings for all that extra work.
The main PCB, switch PCB, and the front panel would need to redone and the software reworked to remove the functionality for the display. That's many hours of work.
The words are selected with the knobs on the E950 so I believe that the software would need to be changed on both modules to add that functionality.
