I know it sounds like a stupid idea, but anyway I want to use the tune of the classic Nokia ringtone in a song (played on a synth, not using a sample) - just played once and as an interlude. Is this legally ok? I found out it is copyrighted in some places, but I could only find reference to use of the sample rather than re-recording it on a synth.
Note that i'm a tiny speck of a band, however I know from one experience in the past that record companies do actually contact you if they suspect you've breached their copyright (which I hadn't, and I thought it was rather funny that they even asked).
