I‘m super into the Kodamo EFM, and it’s super fun to program. No idea if it sounds like an old DX7, but it sounds great and is easy to use. The controlled randomizer function is also a great way to roll the dice in a controlled manner.
You can disable waveform interpolation in the global audio menu for a more lofi sound.
You can also load in 8 bit (or even lower resolution) sine waves and use those instead of the cleaner default sines - this dirties up the sound similarly to the disable waveform interpolation, but on a per operator basis rather than global. One of the great features then is that you can mix completely clean ultra-modern FM sounds with lo fi grungy sounds on a taste. It's amazingly flexible.
