General Gear • Re: New Yamaha finger drum pad FGDP-50

Finally got the 50 and I think it's great. Sure, the sounds are no better than most late 90s sample-based drum machines and the pads are small, but I found them to be pretty responsive. I don't have tons of finger-drumming experience, but I'm a drummer and have no problems doing rolls and flams on these pads. It's a great unit to have around: small, lightweight, battery-powered, internal speaker, connectivity, sample-loading, recording, etc. I'm thinking about buying the FGDP-30 for my 11yo son.

I think it's a bit unfair comparing it against a pad controller + drum softsynth combo. You *can* use the FDGP as a pad controller with your favorite softsynth, but there's so much more you can do with it. Anyway, just like most of us have multiple synths, or multiple drum machines, multiple guitars, or multiple drum kits, I suppose it's ok for a finger-drummer to have multiple controllers and use whatever feels right for the occasion.
