I used it in both modes. Were you using it standalone? That’s literally the only reason you’d need the Configurator except maybe to redirect a cue output or something. I’ve never messed with the mixing at all. I just use AUM as my mixer and don’t bother with any of the internal mixing. My ES-9 sounded good and didn't bleed. I was aware that people thought the config tool was difficult so I read all of the code and the manual before buying it. I was able to configure it having read the manual despite the config tool being completely unprofessional.
I am probably not the target audience for ES-9 since I make almost all my money writing software and am just a lowly hobbyist musician (not a serious gigging performer who would be doing mixing and EQ on a web page), but I think the great idea of making an affordable DC coupled interface is pointlessly coupled with also making the interface a mixer. If I had realized how much of ES-9 is mixer oriented, I would never have bought it in the first place.
I wrote my own config tool to deal with ES-9, but then Push 3 came out and I sold ES-9. At my moments of greatest frustration with ES-9, I did want to smash it. But it is an excellent solution for hybrid setups and I could see myself getting one in order to play my 420hp euro serge with Max power and a PS5 controller...
I think part of the problem with all of their configuration software is that OS is an engineer, and not a designer. I’m sure it makes sense to a certain type of brain, but that generally doesn’t coincide with creative types.
In standalone mode, not much problem. I spent like an hour doing an unfancy set-up so I had some stereo mixing and further down the device the outputs were more sharply attenuated. This way I could just play what I was hearing without being hooked up to a computer and not have to think about it.
In hosted mode, I had to do something a little more complicated so I could send CV in and out as desired and that also wasn't too bad. I think the problem began when I accidentally switched between the two modes or reset a profile to debug and couldn't get it back in the state I wanted (possibly user error-- I brought my giant serge to a synth meet). I think you do need the configurator for this if you want to be able to send CV into software.
Side note... I also spent 2+ years of my life inventing a Pd system only to realize, "oh wait... M4L is what I want"
