Really interesting insights from everyone, thank you all - I have decided to approach it slightly differently based on the replies too. Thinking of getting one drum machine in the digital/synthesis world and then another that I'll use for sampling, sequencing synths and layering analog/real drums to the digital drums here and there.
Currently debating one of these 2 options as the total is exactly the same cost in the UK second hand market:
- Machinedrum + Digitakt
- Erica Synths LXR-02 + Ableton Push 3
I have to say being in the box with giant screen kinda spoiled me so far, and I kind of crave the limitations of having something physical that won't distract the creative workflow so much...but at the same time the tiny screen and Elektron leaning curve are making me second guess
