Modular did not mean you can shift around modules physically, it meant circuits that can re arranged by changing connections and are compatible with each other. It's the compatibility that makes something modular. Theoretically a pin matrix synth is also modular if it has no fixed routes. Semi is kinda relative, it means there is a partially hard wired sound you would typically find in a modular system but it has patchable parts. But it's kinda subjective what you would consider a patch, I see modules now you could consider semi-modular!Interesting, why people are calling things like ARP 2600 or MS-20 - semi-modular.
In terms of putting modules in and out, you can't do it with them.
So, in this case they are semi-modular cause you can patch some sources of MODULation
The modu part of modular and modulation are similar just because they share similar Latin root words. Interestingly modulation originates from music even though it became a common term in electronics.
