The SMD version could also work but might not be the best choice for a noob, as there may be some circuit 'tailoring'.

The body size / volume of the SMD 3046 is obviously smaller. So the relationship between heating current and temperature is different. And it is not placed in a socket but soldered directly on the PCB which makes temperature flow off the chip faster. The last I tried to avoid by adding a rectangular hole under the chip (see picture), but the result still is not perfect, so I am still working on further improvements.
The temperature trimmer adjustment procedure description of the Prodigy service manual is quite complicated and dependent on environmental room temperature. I've not found the perfect adjustment yet.
