Production Techniques • Re: Techno production. Sub first or room treatment?

Hate to say this, but trying to produce pro quality, club ready, bass heavy techno in a small bedroom environment may be a futile, uphill battle (especially if it’s squarish and has mostly hard sufaces, making it difficult to install adequately thick treatment products). At some point you’ll run into some issues related to laws of physics (long wavelengths, room response nodes, etc) that would be much less of an obstacle in a bigger space that can accommodate large monitors/subs and well planned acoustic treatment.
Totally agreed. Standing waves are a given in rectangular rooms, and the more insidious occurrences are full-on frequency cancellations as no amount of volume boosts/cuts will fix that. I think that’s a really common source of the myriad “My mix sounded good until I played it on a different system and then the bass was too loud” posts that are a constant on production forums. The poster heard a lack where the cancellation was happening, boosted until everything overwhelmed the ability to hear the lack that was still there, and then were confused when they played the track in a space without the same shape and the frequency that is no longer masking itself is all of the sudden itself overwhelming.
