Hello,
I think a lot about breakbeat patterns and novel ways to to program using them triggers into modules (as opposed to chopping up samples). I'm just wondering if anybody has thought about the idea below?
Below is a version of an Amen Break tab that I've seen floating around on the internet. I've redone it without a open hat channel to make it simpler.
The red rectangles show that if you take any two steps of the sequence together, there are only six unique pairs in the three bars.
Why is this interesting?
Well, maybe it isn't. But it means that rather than selecting triggers on something like a Metron or a Doepfer A-157, these five combinations of triggers can be patched up with a sequential switch and a CV sequencer, and combined in different ways to make various Amen arrangements from Jungle and DnB tracks.
The patch would be something like this:
Two channels of triggers from Pams New Workout running into the WMD SSM. Channel one is on the clock, at half clock speed. Channel two is at half clock speed, swung by 30% and offset by one.
Odd number steps take channel one, even number steps take channel two.
There are only five pages to program into the SSM and these are selected by CV.
Has anybody given any thought to how many of the famous breakbeat patterns could be analysed like this and how many elemental forms they could be reduced to?
