My approach to this is to start with more complex digital oscillators or samplers that do a lot of the work of generating interesting sounds upfront, and don't really benefit from the advantages of analog in the same way as things further down the signal path, and have everything else be analog.Hi-
I thought I'd share some of my recent thoughts about playing and performing with a modular. Maybe it will be interesting for some...
TL;DR= enjoying a recent decision to go with an all-analogue, sequencer-free modular working out well for me. full version below:

I'd been at 12Ux104hp for about 12 years. I felt that this was the ideal for me regarding variety and portability to travel and/or play gigs. I've had a nice folding suitcase set-up for about 8 of those 12 years and it has been quite good.
My philosophy has always been to have a little bit of ALL the things modular could have - since they've become more common i've had digital voices, sequencers, and even sampling (i started with the original tyme sefari quite a long time/tyme ago.) When I began my modular 20+ years ago it was of course all analogue (Doepfer and ASolutions) and in many ways that has been my favorite part of modular. I've always loved the range, sound, user experience of analogue. But digital has always provided so many plusses - unique sounds, tons of complexity, in some instances, memory. Digital also has allure and GAS associated with it because designers are constantly introducing novelties. ARM, ATMEGA, Arduino etc encourages designers to port over computer music ideas and/or extreme functional density which has created GAS for me ("if i get that i can do this new thing etc...").
I've been suspecting for the past few years that I really wanted to go back to "all analogue." My favorite sounds are from feedback (audio and control) and i find the limitations and challenges of "patch programming" to be a LOT more rewarding than the button combos and menus that accompany digital modules. Equally important is the aesthetic - digtal has too many minuses for me regarding sound/aesthetic.
For me, it's really difficult to get compelling and new sounds out of analog sound sources without very precise tuning.
