i like to use a pnp diff pair as a gnd referenced cv processor (attenuverting cv input comes along for free), then mirroring the collector current at V- by an npn pair. the pnp pair's emitter current could be supplied from V+ through a resistor, but it's better to use a constant current source there (another pnp pair). so 2-3 transistor pairs in total, but no opamps:) and no matching is needed.
this gives a tanh response to cv, so starts as exp, close to linear in the middle and then smoothly reaches the max gain. not very precise, but highly usable (and musical - if a cv response can be described with words like that:D). the old serge vca has a similar response.
