Production Techniques • Dumbass GAINSTAGING questions - am struggling here!

Dear Anyone.

If I'm wrong in any of this - and there's about a 90% chance I am - PLEASE tell me why. I'm trying to keep this succint so things might sound like 'statements' but I'm not sure by miles about any of this.

Hokay. Gain's volume going IN, Volume is loudness coming OUT. (Am I right so far?) So why do you need GAIN plugins? As you're setting everything on 0DB (so I heard in a YouTube vid) why not just turn the sliders up to full and use a compressor to control the output (I've tried that, it doesn't sound the same as the professional comparison track I'm using to learn from, I don't understand why!)

Can you AUTOMATE Gain? Is there a Gain plugin (hopefully 32-bit - SORREE, old DAW, it's the only DAW I've ever understood, Quick Score Elite Level 2 - but I COULD use JBRIDGE with a 64-bit one, no?) that accepts CC7 or has MIDI Learn or MIDI Edit? I know about the Blue Cat one but that's got bugs in. It doesn't hold its settings. After awhile, everything goes back to max. volume and you've got to redo the settings all over again! Anything else anyone knows of with CC7/Midi Learn/Midi Edit? Reason - I've got a little bunch of noisemakers that can't be automated - they're stuck on full volume. Was hoping if I fould something with CC controls, I could use that as an insert effect and control them that way.

And finally, hoping I don't have any questions about anyone's answers - I've got a little collection of tracks that sound fine, volume-wise when you listen to them. If I chuck one in Audacity, you suddenly see it's clipping like a hairdresser on speed! If I turn the sounds down so it's NOT clipping in Audacity, they sounds too quiet as tracks even though Audacity says they're NEARLY clipping! What's probably going on with those? I've honestly no idea - but the collection of tracks doing that's growing larger all the time, hence all the above questions about gainstaging!

I put some people's tracks in Audacity and they've got MASSIVE waveforms, blue brick jobs, yet Audacity says they're not clipping. My ones that are clipping have got far smaller waveforms. So how come these blue bricks aren't clipping and my much smaller ones are?

Last bit - I'm NOT after max loudness in the loudness wars, I write New Age music (or try to!) I just want to understand the technique of making mine sound the same loudness as all the other tracks I hear without any clipping going on.

Yours hopefully

Chris, who might have one other ghastly question depending on the answers to the above!
